It's not a good morning here at Basset Rescue Network.
Last night, Bertie, our beautiful basset who has gone through so much in the past week, passed over to the bridge. We are devastated.
Yesterday, Demi went to see him in the morning, and she said he was very sad and not himself. During the afternoon he became distressed, so by early evening the vets decided to put him under an anaesthetic, to X-ray him to see if there was anything wrong where he had his operation.
Upon x-ray it was apparent that there was a pocket of air or fluid in his spinal cord, and as the vets tried to deal with it, unfortunately Bertie went into shock and suffered a cardiac arrest.
The vet team at the hospital tried valiantly to revive him, but to no avail. Bertie slipped away peacefully whilst still under the anaesthetic.
We are absolutely heartbroken, and there are no words to ease our sadness.
We would like to thank the team at Calder Vets, Dewsbury, for their amazing care and support.
You have all been so incredibly generous since we told you of Bertie's plight, and many of you ordered off his wishlist ready for when he came home. We would like to thank each and every one of you, and if this is ok, we're going to send the items that have been bought to Roxy, our other basset on wheels, as she can use them instead. For people who have donated money to his rehabilitation, or would like a refund of your money, please email us here, if not, we can assure you all money will be placed in our emergency fund, which is kept for emergency veterinary payments for our hounds. If you have any queries, please don't hesitate to email us.
We didn't leave you behind, Bertie.
Sleep well x
